The 4th NewCoast Cup was run at Wyong GC hosted by the CCWGA.
Players had great conditions for the 6 morning foursomes matches. The NHDLGA team had a terrific start & won the session 4-2. The teams of Helen Haynes(Hawks Nest) & Katrina Skinner-Oyston (Maitland), Theresa Lonergan (Newcastle) & Deb Plummer (Waratah), Carol Knox (Merewether) & Kylie Tape (Belmont), Denise Sainty (Hawks Nest) & Mandy Dickson (Hawks Nest) all had excellent wins. The teams of Dom Kelly (Merewether) & Jill Blenkey (Newcastle), Jenny Frost (Nelson Bay) & Fran Giudes (Nelson Bay) were unable to add to the tally. This put NHDLGA in a good position leading into the afternoon session of 12 singles matches.
In near perfect conditions, the NHDLGA team put up a brave fight but could not match our Central Coast opponents, losing the afternoon session 7.5 – 4.5. Denise Sainty, Jenny Frost, Katrina Skinner-Oyston & Theresa Lonergan had great wins. Deb Plummer had a tie with a great match that went right to the 18th. It finally came down to the last two matches between the top two seeds of both teams. NHDLGA needed a win or a tie in one of these matches to win or force a sudden death playoff.
Helen Haynes vs Kim Burke & Dom Kelly vs Georgie Clune. It was a great battle for both matches & both went to the 17th hole. Helen fought so well against a top opponent in Kim, with Kim’s putting in particular, causing Helen many problems. In the end, Kim was too good & she won the match. Dom Kelly fought back from being 4 down in her match early on, to being all tied, going up the 13th. By the end of the 16th, she was 1 down. On the par 3, 17th, both players were not on the green with their tee shots, but both chipped close, which required a must make putt for Dom to keep the match going. Unfortunately for her, the ball sat agonisingly on the edge of the hole & would not drop. This left Georgie with a putt to win the match & win the NewCoast Cup, which she did. This resulted in the CCWGA winning the NewCoast Cup 9.5-8.5.
